How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I audi car key replacement got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
